Ugandans have been over fishing Lake Victoria for years. The quantity of fish has now seriously decreased so much that people are using illegally sized nets to capture younger and younger fish.
What happens when illegal fishing meets government corruption? Perhaps not what you would think. As reported in the Daily Monitor recently, the mayor of a village was fishing with an illegal net in January when a fishing patrol came upon his boat. He decided to swim away to escape arrest, and was then eaten by a crocodile.
A recent report suggests that 5 people are eaten every month by crocodiles. Crocodiles are common in the swampy waters of Uganda, but they're only recently starting to turn seriously to people because of the fish shortage.
It looks like a vicious cycle may have started ...
