Don't feel too bad. Literary Saloon links to an interesting article on how some of our favorite authors were shot down many, many times.
Not mentioned is my personal favorite: the original Dune book by Frank Herbert, one of my favorite pieces of sci-fi, was rejected by over 20 publishers before being published.
